Great news that one of our clients was granted asylum today. This remarkable young man fled his native country in Africa when he was only 17 years old because of the torture and persecution he suffered as a homosexual youth. Living in a country where homosexuality is a crime, he had been viciously attacked by the police, his neighbors, and friends. He finally fled the country when the police began tracking him again for arrest.

Since arriving in Portland four years ago at the age of 17, he managed to get himself an apartment and enroll at Portland High School – all without knowing anyone and without speaking English. He’s now a high school graduate, fluent in English, and working two jobs. His hope, if granted asylum, was to return to school and we’re thrilled to have been a part of making that a possibility for him.
