Micah Smart is a partner in Murray Plumb & Murray’s Bankruptcy & Business Reorganization and Litigation practice groups, specializing in representing businesses, lenders, and individuals in bankruptcy, collection, and commercial litigation matters. Micah’s bankruptcy practice focuses on representing creditors in Chapter 7, 11, 12, and 13 proceedings and he regularly advises clients on commercial collections, workouts, distressed property sales, and foreclosure matters. Whether assisting a secured lender with enforcing its rights in bankruptcy court or guiding a business through complex asset recovery litigation, Micah brings a strategic, solutions-oriented approach to every case with an eye toward the client’s best interest.
In addition to his creditors’ rights work, Micah has substantial litigation experience, with a focus on construction disputes and mechanics’ liens. Micah has represented contractors, property owners, and lenders across all facets of litigation, from initial dispute resolution through post-judgment collections. He is known for his ability to navigate complex legal and financial issues with a practical mindset.
Before joining Murray Plumb & Murray, Micah was a shareholder and Chair of the Bankruptcy and Litigation practice groups at a large regional Maine law firm, where he built a strong foundation in business restructuring, creditors’ rights, and litigation.
Micah has served as a legal intern with Chief Judge Peter G. Cary of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Maine and Hon. Judge Kermit V. Lipez of the First Circuit Court of Appeals. He earned his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law, where he received the Commercial Law Award and the Laurie A. Gibson Award for Excellence for the highest score on the essay portion of the Bar Exam.
Before law school, Micah spent a year teaching English in rural Colombia, an experience that continues to inform his thoughtful, people-first approach to legal practice. He now lives in Saco, Maine with his wife, two children, a blue-eyed shepsky named Bowie, and tuxedo cat named Ziggy.
