Summer Associate Program

Murray Plumb & Murray is a law firm that aims to maintain our reputation for high caliber work product practicing throughout the state and New England. Our attorneys work in a wide range of practice areas, and a summer associate should expect to work with most of the lawyers at the firm on a variety of tasks, ranging from assisting with transactional work to providing support for ongoing complex litigation.

Our ideal candidate has an interesting and engaging personality, demonstrates academic excellence, displays an entrepreneurial drive, an affinity for problem solving, and has a long-term commitment to living in Maine. Applicants should express their preferred areas of law, but if selected, will be encouraged to explore all practice areas at Murray Plumb & Murray during their summer associate experience.

As we are a flexible firm, the exact start and end date of the summer associate program are subject to change based on the needs and school schedule of the chosen applicants, but tend to run ten to twelve weeks beginning in mid to late May and ending in August. Our summer associates work in our offices in downtown Portland, Maine, and in addition to working with all of our attorneys will have the opportunity to experience life in one of America’s best small cities.

Interested applicants should email a cover letter, resume, grade transcript, and writing sample by July 15 to hiring@mpmlaw.com. Writing samples can include any variety of legal writing, including but not limited to briefs, research memos, and scholarly articles, but must be an example of the applicant’s individual work. Please keep writing samples to 5-10 pages in length; if a longer piece is submitted, we ask that the applicant direct us to the 5-10 page section they wish us to review. The applicant’s cover letter should describe why they are interested in our firm, why they wish to practice in Portland, and why they think that they would thrive at Murray, Plumb & Murray in the long term.

About Murray Plumb & Murray
Nearly five decades ago, three Maine attorneys joined together and took the less-traveled road. They left the safety and comfort of big firms to do something that felt like a better fit for them and provided a greater service to clients. They started a smaller, slightly unorthodox firm with humanity at its core.

We see each other and clients as people first. Respectful, genuine relationships rooted in upfront, open communication are the linchpin of every legal endeavor we pursue.

We are steadfastly committed to helping businesses, entrepreneurs, families, and individuals succeed in their personal and professional lives. From education and business law to real estate and employment matters, our ingenious attorneys and practice groups are eager to delve into and solve complex issues because we help our clients protect what matters most.
